Following up on a previous thread here I have finally gotten around to picking up a GXP1405 as something I can use if I have to work from home (callcenter related job) and also as a second home phone if needed.
This thread is kind of a PSA on firmware upgrades on these largely because there seems to be a thread on it on GS's old forums but it is hard or impossible to get beyond the first page via Google's cache but the first page got me going on the right path.
Basically the phone I got did not seem to be updated at all. I forgot the exact firmware version it came with but it was something like 1.0.2.x. At that low of a firmware it seems based on existing posts in GS's old forum that it has a hard time updating to newer versions without finagling it a bit and someone even mentioned the phone possibly looking for more files beyond just the gxp1400fw.bin that is provided in current firmware downloads. Didn't seem to like updating from either the fm.grandstream.com/gs or firmware.grandstream.com locations. This is even after doing a full factory reset.
What I ended up doing originally was grabbing an old tool I like to use on occasion called HFS HTTP File Server. Does what it says in a simple and portable fashion with a relatively easy to use GUI. Plus side is it has verbose on screen logging of all connections. First step I located the following directly online of older firmware:
http://malab.grandstream.com/firmware/GXP21XX/1.0.5.23/
Grabbed all the relevant gxp1400*.bin files, threw them in HFS, pointed the phone at that server, and most importantly I forced an update check via Telnet. Very simple in that you log in to the phone via your favorite telnet app, use the admin password, and just run the 'upgrade' command once or twice until it asks you to confirm y/n.
With the 1.0.5.23 firmware with all of the files I found even the ancient 1.0.2.x firmware only polled for the gxp1400fw.bin file and was able to successfully update to 1.0.5.23. Once that was done and rebooted. Did it all again and this time using the latest 1.0.8.5 firmware from GS's firmware page still served up in HFS and once again was able to update successfully.
So that is that. Hopefully it helps someone else out along the line. I know Google absolutely loves to index this forum quite regularly so this might be an alternative rather than trying to dig up GS's old forum archives.
