[General] Suggestions for an easy to use VOIP service for my parents

$

I'm personally a customer of PhonePower with a Obi device and have been VOIP since the SunRocket days. I like PhonePower (even though their fees have climbed recently on their Obi annual plan) but couldn't see my non tech savvy parents setting up an Obi device. The situation is Verizon is ending copper service at my parents home on March 1st and they don't want FIOS because of the logistics of powering the ONT and the lines coming into the house (some genius embedded the cable and phone lines in the concrete patio instead of installing conduit). So what's an easy to use option that I can assist with from hundreds of miles away? I'm thinking of: 1. Comcast, as I bought them an EMTA when I moved their internet from DSL to cable 3 months ago as I knew the copper transition was coming but they didn't have a termination date yet. Looks like they may be able to go to a 24 month Triple Play deal for an additional $10/month plus whatever fees Comcast charges for phone service. 2. Ooma. Looks like it would be easy enough, even though they charge a port fee that is high in my opinion. Basic service would probably be sufficient. 3. Port to a temp cell account then port to Google Voice and just forward the home number to their cell phones. They've had their home phone number since 1984 so they are attached to the actual number, not their POTS service necessarily. Or #4, any other ideas.... Thanks for the advice in advance....

[Equipment] One-way audio with Cisco IAD and Edgerouter.

So I have a Cisco IAD2431-1T1E1.... basically a Sip-to-PRI converter for my Nortel Meridian Option 11C and it's the best thing I've ever owned, asides from a steep learning curve, it performs things marvelously. However, That was set up on a different connection than my home connection. With that other connection no longer being available to me, I have to connect this to my home connection. Here's how it's set-up. 1. I have a Edgerouter 4, that does routing. 2. The IAD is connected to an unmanaged switch, which in turn, is connected to the Edgerouter. I just managed to get it working with a connection to VoIP.ms after configuring my settings in the IAD. What has me stumped however, is that I only get one-way audio and I cannot transmit. I can receive but not transmit at all. Not even DTMF that is out of band is interpreted correctly. IS there anything I could do to rectify this?? Let me know if I'm at the wrong forum.

[General] Canadian DID; VoIP Android App; Correctly Handles Group Messages?

$

Is there a VoIP service with Canadian phone #s available, similar to Google Voice with the Hangouts or Google Voice app, that correctly handles MMS and group texts like GV with the Hangouts or Google Voice app does? The goal would be for the user to use an Android VoIP app meeting the above requirements with one of the Fido 4GB/mo tablet plans in an unlocked cell phone. TextNow --almost-- meets the above requirements, but replying to a group message, even after the group message is received correctly on the TextNow phone #, ends up NOT sending replies to all recipients, and TextNow can't seem to fix it to correctly work like Google Voice does for group messages. Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.

Does it Cost $$ when a carrier asks to Port from the `Losing Carr

Does it Cost $$ when a carrier asks to Port from the `Losing Carrier Why is is so simple and quick when porting from cell phone providers (versus) what seems like a litteral project when porting from telcom vendors. In this case in would be voip porting from Verizon Business. I swear I'm at wits end on what seems like what should seem like a simple process. Submit LOA, provide (winning carrier with copy of most recent invoice if not CSR). They should just -submit- the request on their end. What am I amiss on this process. Not in regards to the provided port date, but just the mere process of even -submitting- for the port request

[Anveo] Has anyone ever called 911 with Anveo?

I'm looking for experiences, good or bad. I am currently using Anveo and 933 works to confirm it, but I am just curious if anyone has actually used it? If so, did it connect right away and correctly report your address? Thank you.

[Other] Flowroute: if outbd call is forwarded, destination nbr displayed

I use Flowroute on a Grandstream GXP2140 desk phone. Sometimes when I dial out to a number XXX-XXX-XXXX and the destination phone system forwards the call to YYY-YYY-YYYY, then when the call is eventually answered, the YYY-YYY-YYYY number shows up on my display. Example: LL Bean's main number is 800-441-5713. When I dial it, then when the call is answered, my display switches to 207-552-2000, which is a number in Maine, where Bean is located. (You might confirm this behavior if you have Flowroute. And maybe it happens on other VOIP networks, too.) I find this surprising because as the caller, I'd think that the forwarding destination is none of my business. Bean probably doesn't care, but I could imagine situations in which the recipient of such a call would be displeased that the caller gets to see the forwarding destination. A shelter for battered women, for instance, might be pretty unhappy about that, given that batterers are often keen to locate their victims -- the destination number might be a pretty big clue to the shelter's physical address. Is this revelation of the forwarding destination a common occurrence in phone systems? Does it indicate a misconfiguration at Flowroute or at the destination company?

[General] GVJack App Stopped Working a Few Weeks Ago

Help!! I'm a registered user of the GVJack App (version 3) and have been using it for a few years with no problems until about 4 weeks ago. The app uses the RTC Browser and the auto login with Google fails with the message "something went wrong". I can manually log on using the RTC browser but can't proceed - the app requires the auto login. I emailed PCphonesoft.com and have had no response. When I check for updates through the app it says I'm using the latest version. Any help would be appreciated.

[Other] NoMoRoBo now sometimes prompts for a 2-digit code

I know of two NoMoRoBo numbers: 202-729-9229 and 202-813-1600. For a junk calls, both used to always answer then say "Please try your call again later" and hang up. Today I noticed that sometimes 202-813-1600, instead of hanging up, prompts the caller to enter a 2-digit code to prove that they're a human. I think that the prompt for a code is new. Does any of you know how that came about? If you'd like to test NoMoRoBo, below are some numbers that NoMoRoBo blocks lately. You could set one of these as your outbound caller ID. Keep in mind that if you make two calls to NoMoRoBo from the same number within a few seconds, it might give you a busy signal for the second call. 2024558987 2073379490 2087179616 2162081075 2202011398 4793606499 5028045202 5033341498 5102530959 5102530959 5102545283 5102704237 6502678646 7037832046 7037832096 7607058888 8005420624 8005420624 8728173267 9162497569 9293463245 9293463250 9293463250 9293463253 9852775034 9852775034

Simple Call flow setup problem

I found Call Flow a pain and a mystery. When I set the default call flow it resulted in all incoming calls ringing once and not connecting. I clicked and clicked and fumbled with it and finally got it working but don't know what made it work. Afraid to tinker with it for fear of messing it up again. Where can I find simple instruction; I found the built in help not much help and did not explain things clearly. Suggestions?

Under Phone port settings the field "CidNoNameFormat" exists and defaults to "Show code O". Other choices are "Show blank" and "show caller number". Can't find any documentation on "code 0". wondering if anyone has any info or if that field even does anything.

[General] Looking for Voip Number to own

Ok, I bought (several years ago) a VOIP number that I can take with me anywhere in the world and port to any provider and it is great.I have it set up with a 'pay as you go service' and it is perfect. I now want another number (with UK prefix) but cannot seem to be able to find where I can just buy a number. I dont want monthly costs, fees or commercial junk following me around that I can just add to a dect phone and forward calls when needed. Any one know where I can even find one if possible ?

Talkatone Revoked Ported In Number

I use to have RingTo to park my number and about two years ago ported my number to Talkatone. I have been pretty good with making a call here and there but they finally got me, I did not see their warning email cluttered in junk email and they revoked my ported in number . I realized about two weeks after the fact. I just emailed their support but I doubt they will do anything. It is kind of BS that they do this, I understand you get what you pay for - in hindsight I should have just paid $25 to port to GV but then I would have to use a mobile carrier as a middle ground. Surprised there are not more FCC rules that prevent this - they should give you more than one email warning the day before

[General] Cheapest Inactive US Phone Number

I am looking to get a US phone number and would like to know what the cheapest option is. I am not planning on making or receiving any phone calls or text messages, but I need the number to be maintained and reliable (that is, the company would not take back the number or go out of business), including if there is no activity on the account (except for my paying the bill). A free number would also be fine as long as it can be maintained without use. Am open to any kind of US phone number, whether it be through a VOIP provider, a smartphone app, or something else. The link on the left says it was not updated in 10 yrs, so I was not sure how to see a quick comparison of the options. Thanks!

[Anveo] Friend's Anveo DID went AWOL / bye-bye

Years back, I set my friend up with a simple and cheap $15 3GB tablet plan in Canada. Slapped a SIM in a basic Android handset and had her use Anveo to make SIP calls through an app. She's been complaining about her phone not working, so I assumed the crappy smartphone bit the dust. After hearing more symptoms from afar, I narrowed her woes to Anveo. She made a test call to me and her Caller ID reflected an American number, not the Canadian one we got her many moons ago. I looked at her billing to see when the DID went MIA. It looks like she had a 10-day payment window with Anveo before the phone number was canceled. She topped her account up 3 hours after the number was purged. Any means to get it back? Hoping the Anveo overload(s) are reading this post. Anveo support response Unfortunately it is not possible to restore your phone number. You may order new phone number at: Phone Numbers -> Order A New Phone number

Cisco 303 is EOL'ed now. https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/collaboration-endpoints/small-business-spa300-series-ip-phones/eos-eol-notice-c51-741208.html What is the forum recommendation for a low budget desktop VoIP phone with power supply? (NO PoE). Two line phone is fine too, but it must have user buttons (hard or soft) for call forward and call hold that work with voip.ms service. Thanks BTW I am open to other hardware manufacturers based on your personal experience. Not just cisco model replacement

[Equipment] Preferred ATA (Callcentric for provider)

I'm thinking about moving my MIL's home phone (currently on AT&T Wireless) over to Callcentric (where my home phone number is). I'm currently using a Linksys PAP2T for mine, was wondering what the current thinking on best ATA is. One consideration - we are in Kansas City KS (area code 913), but KCMO is possibly also semi frequently called (area code 816). I'd like to make the calling as easy as possible (try to avoid the 1-913 for her if possible). There will not be voicemail on her line (she uses a Panasonic that records). Thanks in advance. Scott

[General] CallWithUs: This Is Most Unfortunate

$

CallWithUs has always aimed to avoid working with telemarketers, as we disagree with their business on principle. Unfortunately, this has been difficult, as the majority of recent sign-ups have been from telemarketers, creating a lot of work for us in filtering them out. To help stem the tide of unwanted calls, we have temporarily disabled new sign-ups so that we can better focus on our existing, legitimate customers. Sign-ups will be reopened eventually, please check back in a year or two.

[Voip.ms] Guide Cisco 7941 getting started

$

Guide to getting VOIP.ms working on Cisco 7941 After buying my 7941 on ebay, I was driven mad trying to get this phone working on voip.ms. The guides on the internet were incomplete or using other services. I figured I would give my knowledge out there to all that want a cheap voip phone. (these go for ~$15 on ebay right now) Step 1) When you get your phone, it most likely will have firmware on it for Cisco's call manager. This is not what we want. We want the SIP firmware to connect to voip.ms. Pay attention here because you cant use the latest firmware, the phone wont register with it. To get the firmware, go to: https://software.cisco.com/download/home/280083379/type/282074288/release/8.5(2)SR1 The firmware on that exact page 8.5(2)SR1 is what you will want. The exact file you want is the one that says "Phone Firmware Files Only - Compatible UCM" (the bottom one) Do not download the top one its not needed. In order to get this file, you will need to register an account with cisco. This account is free, but you must provide actual information as cisco's servers will look for falsafied info. If you get an email after you register saying your account must be verified, dont panic, i had that too and its a small waiting game for it to activate. Step 2) Now that you have your firmware, You will need a TFTP server to upload it to the phone. This step is going to be cut into two parts. You will follow one or the other depending on your situation with your phone. If you can access the settings menu in your phone (settings button above the volume control) press it and then type * * # on the phone's keypad and go to Network Configuration >> IPv4 Configuration >> make sure DHCP is enabled and then scroll down to Alternate TFTP set that to yes. If you CAN'T set it, go to Step 2B. If you CAN set it, continue with step 2A below and skip 2B. Step2A) This step assumes you can set "Alternate TFTP" to "Yes" under Network Config >> IPv4 Config. Scroll down to TFTP Server 1 (its in the same settings menu as the "Alternate TFTP") press edit and set the IP address you will be using for the TFTP server (a windows desktop computer is fine.) To enter the periods in the IP address, use the * button. Now on the desktop computer you secified in the phone, you will need a TFTP server. I recommend SolarWinds TFTP server. (https://www.solarwinds.com/free-tools/free-tftp-server) Once installed create a folder on your desktop named cisco and unzip the files from the zip we downloaded earlier into the folder. Put the XMLDefault.cnf.xml file i have for you in the folder with the files. Now in SolarWinds, hit file and configure and you should see start and stop buttons. Press stop if its started and at the botton fo the window hit browse and select your cisco folder on your desktop. Now hit start at the top and close the window. Now, on your phone press settings then * * # * *. The phone should reboot. It will boot normally and then reboot itself again. Don't press anything it should reboot into an upgrading screen and begin installing the firmware you downloaded. Step2B) This step assumes you cannot set the TFTP server in the settings menu or you cannot access the settings menu at all for whatever reason. For you, there is a youtube video that explains how to get the firmware installed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTdeb1YMtsI Make you you use the firmware we downloaded in step 1!! After you follow these steps and get the proper firmware on the phone press the settings button then press * * # on the keypad and then go to Network Configuration >> IPv4 Configuration >> Alternate TFTP. Set that to yes then Settings button >> Network Configuration >> IPv4 Configuration >> TFTP Server1 and set this to an ip your will use for the tftp server (can be a windows desktop computer). (use * key as the decimal point) Step 3) Alright! we got our firmware installed and we are almost done! Now time to get this puppy configured. I have included an XML file named "SEPMAC.cnf.xml" Go to settings on your phone and then network configuration. Your phone's MAC address should be shown as the 3rd setting down. in the downloaded XML file (SEPMAC.cnf.xml) replace the MAC portion of the filename with this MAC address. Example: SEP00670B84A05.cnf.xml. Next, right click the file and select edit (or open it in notepad or your favorite ACII editor). You'll wanna use the find tool in the editor and replace all instances of the following with your information. ##VOIPMS## - Replace with your voip.ms server of choice. ##LABEL## - this is the label that appears on the phone screen beside the line. You can put whatever you want here. ##VOIPMSUSER## - this is your voip.ms username number. ##VOIPNAME## name you want to be sent to VOIP.ms. Not sure what this is for but you can safely put your name such as John here. ##VOIPMSPASS## - your voip.ms password. Be sure to set this in your account settings. Save the file in your cisco folder. Step 4) Download the dialplan.xml I provided. No need to edit it. Place it in the cisco folder. Step 5) reboot your phone (settings button then * * # * *) With luck, your phone should reboot and download the xml files in the cisco folder and register with voip.ms. Congrats! BONUS INFO!
