Solution for being on hold

We all hate being on hold. They play crappy music, often with lyrics so you can't work properly. Few have silence. And if they do they seem to incessantly interrupt that silence with something mindless like "Please wait, we'll be with you shortly". Really? I really needed to hear that. I thought I'd get through faster by hanging up! So how about if the caller plays a repeating message instructing the other side to hit a certain key that would trigger an audio notification on our side? I'm thinking of this in terms of a computer/softphone application. This way we can turn the volume of that softphone program in C:\Windows\System32\SndVol.exe off. Upon hearing the audio notification we turn it up to resume the call. The volume of everything else is untouched this way. Of course one could not use that softphone for anything else as the volume would be off. But for a multi-line system one could use multiple softphones. Does this sound workable? I'm writing this while on hold for 40 minutes. Yesterday was over 2 hours. Such a joy. They play 3 songs endlessly.
