I am uncertain/ having difficulty in finding providers that can give me good call quality with a high frequency. I am also unsure as to the process that I should go through in finding such providers. I am in the US.
Here is what I want:
1- no privacy infraction committing big tech companies
2- VOIP provider for $15 or less per month for 3 phone numbers. I don't need E911 service.
3- SMS on all numbers. Phone number 3 will be a throwaway number (I will need to change it every couple of months or so).
4- Encryption. I prefer VPN (budget is $5/mo for a respectable VPN). Also open to having the VOIP company handle the encryption but I then need a way to bypass my VPN in Linux and Windows and use VOIP encryption instead. I do not want to have to disconnect my VPN to make calls. Reason for encryption is to keep the data away from my ISP.
5- I want the VOIP company to delete the metadata logs after a reasonable amount of time (1year maybe?). Has reasonable privacy protections (doesn't give other companies access to my data).
6- puts the calls through mobile network
7- privacy respecting soft phone for Windows and Linux
I am not sure how to cost/ time effectively test providers. I pinged localphone.com server, saw atrocious ping times but then they said that that doesn't matter because they establish a direct connection for the 2 sides of the call and then their server is basically not involved.
For some providers, though, I guess connecting to the VPN and pinging servers can work?
