Could a pair of ordinary ATA's be used to create a direct / private phone line between two locations that have internet service (one with static IP and the other with infrequently-changing IP)? Not sure if just picking up the handset would be enough to make the phone on the other end ring, or if you'd have to dial some sort of number, but that detail isin't important. I'm just wondering if something like that is workable.
Or is there a gizmo other than an ATA (and it doesn't require an intermediate server) that can do this?
