I'm curious if there is any theoretical differences between these device options. Clearly the IP Phone will have more functionality, support for more codec, etc than an ATA. However when it comes down to call clarity, dropping calls, intermittent voice, etc. does one standard outperform the others?
Why would anyone invest in an ATA when a smartphones can make SIP calls (Zoiper, Hangouts Dialer, etc). Maybe just nostalgia for the old POTS phone?
Is DECT/CAT-IQ a better standard than WiFi for transmitting voice in a residential setting? Maybe having dedicated hardware plugged into the router is better than multitasking on a smartphone/PC?
The resource demands/bandwidth for VOIP are not high and these devices can support them so what is the advantage to an IP Phone over a smartphone for call clarity. There might be a comfort element to having a headset. Any thoughts?
When using VOIP at my house, the most common issue is the "can you hear me know" dropped calls which then resume after a brief period. Most likely network traffic and bottlenecks. I have fiber internet from CenturyLink and 100/40Mbps speed with low latency. I was thinking of going with VOIP.ms who has a server in Denver and thought might be worth a try.
