This isn't so much of a tech question, but I'm hoping that since most people here use VOIP, some would be familiar with the procedures for porting an existing landline phone number to Google Voice. I had been discussing the issue with the folks in the FIOS forum. I'm planning to switch from DSL to FIOS, but I want to keep my phone number without paying extra for FIOS's digital voice service. I'm familiar with the basics of the process (porting number to prepaid cell service, then porting to GV) but I had a couple concerns over the order in which to do some of the steps.
How long will my DSL remain active once I port out my number? I figure I need to time the port to occur before the switch-over to FIOS, as if I don't get a phone service to go with it, my number would be reassigned to someone else, but if they cut off the DSL as soon as I essentially drop phone service by porting out my landline, that would make it a bit difficult to go online to order FIOS.
As for the VOIP itself, I was recommended to get the Obi 100, which looks pretty cheap and easy to use. Someone also suggested I ask here about the procedure for plugging the unit into a phone jack so that it could connect all the existing jacks in the house. They mentioned something about having to disconnect from the demarcation point, but if the copper line is disconnected once the fiber run is connected, is that still necessary?
